Geçmişte 2 eylemden önce olanı anlatmak için past perfect, sonra olanı ele almak için past simple, could, would veya used to kullanabiliyoruz.
Sebep sonuç ilişkisi bağlaçlar sayesinde açıkça belli olduğu zaman past perfect yerine simple past kullanmanız mümkün oluyor. Zorunlu değil.
- Before the Roman Empire collapsed, it underwent / had undergone massive conflicts.
- After Turkey declared / had declared independence, it immediately began developing diplomatic relationships.
- Because my visa expired / had expired, I was denied entry to the country.
- No one objected / had objected to the verdict of the judge and therefore the trial ended.
Fakat past perfect zamanın olmazsa olmaz olduğu durumlar var.

- When WWII raged across Europe, strongest economies of the time collapsed. (Bu cümleye göre önce savaş çıktı, sonra ekonomi çöktü.)

Bağlaç olmadan geçmişte sebep sonuç
Sebep sonuç ilişkisini ele alacak bir bağlaç olmadığında da past perfect kullanımı zorunlu olabilir.
- All workers went on a strike. They were denied payment. (İma edilen şey, grev yüzünden maaş ödemelerinin durdurulmuş olduğu.)
- All workers went on a strike. They had been denied payment. (Maaş ödemeleri grevden önce durmuş durumdaydı.)

Geçmiş zamana yönelik koşul donuç ilişkisi kurmak için koşul cümlesinde past perfect kullanımı zorunlu.
